What is Sports Hypnosis?

Sports hypnosis refers to the use of hypnotherapy with athletes in order to enhance sporting performance. Hypnosis in sports has therapeutic and performance-enhancing functions. The mental state of athletes during training and competition is said to impact performance.

Certain hypnotic principles make hypnosis particularly suited to sports improvement. First of all there is the concept of mental rehearsal or visualisaton. Any form of mental visualisation is hypnotic, since it involves using the imagination to rehearse the future. This is something that we all do all of the time quite naturally, from imagining what we’re going to have for lunch to planning what we’re going to say at a forthcoming job interview. Hypnosis provides a structure for this natural capacity, and sports hypnosis directs it towards improvements in a player’s game.

Hypnosis is now a mainstream, modern training technique used by top sports professionals; it is not the submissive state that has been portrayed in films and on the stage, and misunderstood by the public. It can help you sharpen your mental focus, relax your body, visualize success, stimulate healing and control your emotions during training or when facing important competition.

The positive effects of hypnosis allow you to approach what sport psychologists, coaches and athletes refer to when they talk about “getting in the zone”. This state of mental functioning allows you to channel attention and energies towards the task at hand.

Does this sound familiar? You’ve worked hard in training, given it your all. You love your sport and you KNOW you are 100% dedicated to succeeding. But…something stands in your way when it comes to the field of competition. You know it’s not physical, because in practice you perform perfectly. Your body knows how; something isn’t getting translated to the game.

You know you can practice and train all you want, but if there’s a mental block, none of it matters. Athletics has been described by many professional athletes as “90 per cent mental.” At Great Wave Therapies, that’s what we focus on–showing you how to anchor your peak performance state, so that you can call upon all of your abilities on command.

It has been said that 90% of most sporting performance is in the mind – so even the keen amateur can gain competitive advantage through hypnotherapy for sports performance.

Anyone can learn simple hypnosis techniques for a range of sports related issues including:

  • Mental imagery and future rehearsal of success (including effective techniques from areas like NLP)
  • Focusing on a Success Strategy – get into the ‘Success Zone’ when you need to
  • Overcoming mental blocks & barriers
  • Reinforcing self-belief, motivation & positive thinking

The great champions and winning athletes also tend to be the ones who have learned to think successfully, they have mastered the psychology of their individual sport. Sporting hypnotherapy is another weapon in their winning strategy that can make that small difference between winning and losing.
